News has surfaced that the Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball (MLB) have set their sights on NC Dinos’ star shortstop Kim Ju-won from the KBO League. The local sports outlet 'That Ball's Outta Here' reported that Philadelphia has been closely monitoring Kim’s rapid development and may jump into a vigorous bidding war if he opts for MLB entry through the posting system in the future.
Philadelphia's ventures in recruiting players from Asia have seen mixed results. Notably, Chan Ho Park in 2009 showed some endurance, oscillating between starter and reliever positions, earning an ERA of 4.43 with a 3-3 record. The last prominent Korean batter was Hyun-soo Kim, who played in 2017. Recently, however, Philadelphia has beefed up their international scouting efforts, particularly in Asia, exemplified by an audacious offer over $300 million intending to secure Yoshinobu Yamamoto, indicative of their revised strategy towards acquiring Asian talents.
Newly targeted by Philadelphia, Kim Ju-won, born in 2002, is a standout ambidextrous infielder in the KBO League. Playing for NC Dinos, he has participated in 701 games boasting a .260 average, 67 home runs, 292 RBIs, 121 stolen bases, and an OPS of .756. His skill set encompasses all three aspects of baseball: defense, offense, and baserunning. His recent enhancement in precision has solidified his position as one of the league’s elite infielders, anticipated to continue hitting in the high .200s, with around 15 home runs and over 30 stolen bases annually, contributing to an OPS over .800.
The critical reason behind Philadelphia’s interest in Kim stems from the uncertainty over their current main infield lineup. Despite having star shortstop Trea Turner under contract until 2033, his recent defensive struggles have raised alarms, to the extent that President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski hinted at a potential positional change if no improvement is shown. If Turner's defensive woes continue, moving Bryson Stott to shortstop is considered a stop-gap solution, yet Stott himself will be free agent eligible after the 2027 season, necessitating a long-term replacement.
Kim Ju-won could potentially challenge for the major leagues as early as the 2027 or subsequent 2028 season, via the posting system. His valuable combination of extensive defensive range and rare switch-hitting ability, coupled with his youth and experience, makes him a prime target for numerous MLB teams. Additionally, several clubs have already dispatched scouts to monitor his game, signifying that the competition to recruit him could intensify once he opts for posting.
