In the recent playoff showdown, KIA Tigers' Kim Doyoung shattered LG Twins with a spectacular performance of three home runs and eight RBIs, and now he's gearing up to clash against the Samsung Lions. With nine homers against Samsung in the regular season, Doyoung’s power at the plate is causing concerns for Samsung as they brace themselves for what he brings to this postseason encounter.
However, Samsung’s manager Park Jin-man exhibited contrasting calm. Despite praising Kim Doyoung as a superstar, he confidently stated that his team was well-prepared to tackle the challenge. His remarks especially stand out as they come right after KIA's triumphant 3-0 series win over LG, propelling them into the playoffs.
Beginning October 25, Samsung and KIA will battle in a best-of-five playoff series. Samsung, finishing second in the regular season, comes well-rested, while third-place KIA minimized their exhaustion with a swift three-game victory in the wildcard round.
This matchup is drawing significant attention as it pits regular season home run leader Kim Doyoung against Samsung’s pitchers, spotlighting whether Samsung can succeed where LG fell short in curbing Doyoung’s offensive dominance.
“Clearly a superstar,” acknowledged Park Jin-man, overwhelmed by Kim Doyoung’s formidable presence
In the wake of KIA toppling LG and securing their playoff berth, Park appraised the competing prowess on October 20.
Park noted the comprehensive preparedness of the KIA squad, highlighting Kim Doyoung’s continuous stellar performance which didn't just subside post the regular season.
It wasn't merely about recognizing the opposing team’s key player; Kim Doyoung’s stats in the wildcard round were compelling enough to prompt a personal shoutout from the rival manager.
In the three games against LG, Doyoung boasted a .333 average with three homers, eight RBIs, and four runs. Every one of his hits, from nine at-bats, was a home run.
The fact that he secured hits exclusively via home runs, altering the game's tempo entirely, was particularly noteworthy. Doyoung transformed into a deciding factor, transcending his role as a mere link in the batting lineup.
He also clinched the series MVP with an overwhelming 86.6% of votes from the press, receiving 84 out of 97 ballots cast.
While Park expressed caution in dealing with Doyoung, he also revealed that Samsung had prepared thoroughly and was capable of countering adeptly, emphasizing that acknowledging Doyoung’s skillset didn’t equate to conceding victory.
"All three hits were home runs?"—Kim Doyoung’s raw power demolishes the LG pitching
Doyoung did more than just hit well in the wildcard round; he dispatched home runs at crucial moments.
On October 17 in Gwangju, during the series opener, he hit two homers contributing four RBIs, leading KIA to a 5-1 victory. His solo homer in the fourth overturned the game, and a two-run blast in the eighth sealed it, tormenting the LG pitchers throughout the game.
Although Doyoung didn't add to his home run tally in the second game, KIA still triumphed 6-3, positioning themselves one win away from playoff progression.
In the critical third game on October 20 at Jamsil, Doyoung again delivered a game-defining blow with a grand slam that substantially widened the score gap, effectively tipping the game's balance towards KIA.
KIA routed LG 13-1 in the third game, sweeping their way through the wildcard round to mark their first playoff appearance in 23 years.
